To be listed on the NYSE, a company must have at least 400 shareholders and 1.1 million shares of stock outstanding. Although more than 80% of trading is now done electronically, the NYSE building on Wall Street in New York City remains a prominent landmark for locals and visitors alike. Another popular stock exchange headquartered in New York, the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) was acquired in 2008. Unlike NASDAQ or NYSE, AMEX specializes in exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
